A snapshot and a photograph often contain exactly the same content. The difference is that somebody decided what the second one should feel like, and then made five small adjustments in a particular order.
Here are the five, in the order that works, with the reasoning for each. None of them takes more than a few seconds once you know what you are looking for.
Move one: get the white balance honest
Everything else depends on this, which is why it goes first. Cameras guess at the color of the light, and they guess badly under mixed lighting, in shade, and anywhere with a strong colored surface bouncing light around.
Find something in the frame that should be neutral: a white wall, gray concrete, paper, the white of an eye. Sample it and look at the red, green and blue values. If they are not roughly equal, you have a cast, and the largest of the three is its color.
Correct it until they match. Then, and this is the part people miss, deliberately push it back a little in the direction you want. Perfectly neutral is technically correct and emotionally blank. A few degrees warm reads as sunlight and comfort; a few degrees cool reads as morning, distance, technology. Neutral is the reference point you deviate from on purpose, not the destination.
Move two: set the range before shaping the tones
Find the darkest point in the image and make it properly dark. Find the brightest and make it properly bright. This is the same operation described in any piece about levels or curves, and it is second here for a reason: contrast decisions made on a flat image are decisions made in the wrong units.
The exception, and it is a useful one: do not always take the black point all the way down. Leaving the deepest shadow at ten or fifteen per cent brightness rather than zero produces the lifted, matte look of a film print. It is one drag and it changes the entire character of an image.
Move three: contrast in the middle, not at the edges
The contrast slider does something crude: it pushes everything away from the middle, which brightens highlights and darkens shadows at the same rate. Detail falls off both ends and the picture gets harder without getting better.
What you actually want is more separation among the mid-tones, where faces, fabric and most subjects live, and gentle handling at the extremes. That is an S curve: steepen the middle, soften the ends.
Applied gently it reads as “well exposed” rather than “edited”, which is the goal. Applied strongly it becomes a look in its own right, and it is the backbone of nearly every high contrast style you have seen.
Move four: split the color between shadows and highlights
This is the move that people describe as cinematic without being able to name it, and it is embarrassingly simple: put one color in the dark parts of the picture and its opposite in the bright parts.
The classic is cool shadows against warm highlights: a little blue or teal in the darks, a little amber in the lights. It works because it mimics how we actually see outdoors, where direct sunlight is warm and shadows are lit by the blue of the sky. Your eye reads it as natural even at strengths well beyond natural.
Reverse it, warm shadows against cool highlights, and you get something colder and more uneasy, which is why it turns up in thrillers.
Keep it slight. The test is to toggle it on and off: you should notice the mood change before you notice the color.
Doing it with three drags
On a curve, switch to the blue channel. Lift the low end of the line very slightly to add blue to the shadows. Pull the high end down very slightly to remove blue, which adds yellow, from the highlights. That is the entire technique.
Move five: vignette and grain, carefully
A vignette darkens the edges of the frame. It is a lens defect that photographers spent decades trying to eliminate and now add back deliberately, because it does something useful: it stops the eye wandering out of the picture and holds attention on the center.
The rules are simple. Make it soft, with a very wide transition, so there is no visible ring. Make it subtle, to the point where you are not sure it is there until you switch it off. And make it slightly off center if the subject is off center, because a vignette centered on nothing draws attention to the middle of an empty area.
Grain does the opposite job. Digital images are smooth in a way film never was, and that smoothness reads as clinical, especially in large flat areas like skies where compression banding shows. A light layer of monochrome grain hides banding, adds an impression of texture and detail, and makes the image feel photographed rather than rendered.
Color grain almost always looks like noise. Monochrome grain almost always looks like film.
About presets and lookup tables
A color lookup table is a stored mapping from every input color to an output color, usually in a .cube file, and it is how film emulations and cinema looks get shared. Loading one applies the entire grade in a single step.
They are genuinely useful, with two caveats. They assume your image arrives in a particular state, so a look built for flat log footage will destroy an already contrasty photograph. And applied at full strength they overwhelm the subject. Load one, then reduce its opacity to somewhere between a third and two thirds, and it becomes a seasoning rather than a costume.
The order matters more than the values
White balance, then range, then mid-tone contrast, then split tone, then texture. Work in that order and each decision is made against a stable foundation. Work in any other order and you will keep going back to fix things you already fixed, because adding contrast changes the apparent color balance and adding color changes the apparent contrast.
Do all five on adjustment layers rather than on the picture itself, so you can turn each one off and see what it contributed. Then reduce whatever you did by about a quarter. Grading is one of the few crafts where the finished work is almost always improved by doing slightly less of it.
