My favorite category of design is the one where the content is not invented at all. Somebody ran a marathon, and the GPS trace of that run is already a drawing. Somebody got married, and the sky over that town on that night is already a picture. The data exists, it has a shape, and the job is to reveal the shape rather than to make something up.
I find this endlessly satisfying, partly because the result means something to the person receiving it in a way that a nice illustration never quite does.
Why data makes good posters
Three reasons, and they compound.
The composition is already there. A route, a coastline, a waveform, a constellation. These are shapes nobody designed and they have a natural asymmetry and complexity that is genuinely hard to draw on purpose.
It is specific. A generic mountain print is decoration. The exact route of the exact race, with the date, is a record. The specificity is the entire emotional payload, and it costs nothing to include.
It is unrepeatable. Nobody else has that trace, that night sky, that waveform. Which turns a print into a personal object without a single custom illustration.
The four data sources I keep coming back to
Routes
Every running watch, cycling computer and hiking app exports GPX, and a GPX file is just a list of points with a time, a position and usually an elevation. Drop it in and you have the line.
The line alone is often enough, and it is the classic marathon poster. But the file usually carries more: pace, heart rate, elevation. Coloring the route by one of those turns a shape into a story, because now you can see the climb where everything slowed down.
Add distance markers and a small stats block with the date, the distance and the time. That is the whole design, and it works because the line is doing the heavy lifting.
Maps
A place, rendered as a poster. The trick that separates a good map print from a screenshot of a map is reduction: throw away almost everything. No labels except one, no icons, no color except two or three. What remains is the street pattern, and street patterns are beautiful in a way that a fully labelled map is not.
Choose the crop deliberately. A tight crop on the neighbourhood somebody actually lives in beats the whole city, because they can find their street.
The night sky
A star map is a calculation: given a place and a moment, this is what was overhead. Wedding date, birth date, the night somebody moved into a house.
The design decision that matters is how much to show. Constellation lines make it legible for people who cannot read a raw star field, and a grid makes it look scientific. Both are optional and both change the character completely: lines and labels give you an illustration, bare stars give you an object.
Sound
A waveform is amplitude over time, and it is the most abstract of the four, which is also its strength. The first dance song, a voice message, a heartbeat from a scan. Nobody can read a waveform, and that does not matter at all, because the person receiving it knows what it is.
Mirroring the wave around its center line is the classic look. A color gradient along its length adds movement. Keep the styling restrained, because the shape is already unusual enough.
The design rules that apply to all of them
One data element, lots of space. The temptation is to add a second route, a second chart, a border pattern. Resist it. These designs work because a complex organic shape sits in a large calm field, and the moment you fill the field the shape stops reading.
Type does the labelling, quietly. A title, a subtitle, a line of coordinates or a date. Small, well spaced, usually centered beneath the shape. If the typography is competing with the data, the typography is wrong.
Two colors, maybe three. Background, data, and one accent. Data prints are one of the few places where a monochrome palette is almost always the right answer.
Check the shape before you commit to the layout. A route that is a long thin loop wants a portrait frame; a route that sprawls wants a square. Let the data choose the format rather than forcing it into the format you had in mind.
Getting it onto paper properly
These are the designs most likely to actually be printed, so a few things are worth getting right.
Work at print size from the start, not at screen size. A route line looks fine on a monitor at a stroke width that vanishes on paper, and hairlines are the classic way this fails.
Keep the line weight generous, thicker than looks right on screen. Ink spreads slightly into paper and thin lines lose contrast.
Leave a wide margin. Frames eat several millimetres on every side, and a design that runs close to the edge will be clipped by the mount. Design as though the outer centimetre does not exist.
And soft proof if the palette is saturated, because deep blues and blacks are exactly where screen and paper disagree most, and a night sky print is almost entirely deep blue and black.
Start with your own data
If you want to try this, do not start with a client. Export a GPX from your own last walk, or find the date of something that matters to you, and make one print for yourself.
You will learn more from that than from any tutorial, because you will care about whether the result is right, and caring is what makes you notice that the crop is slightly off or the line is too thin. That noticing is the actual skill.
