City Diorama

Any place on earth as a miniature you could hold: real streets, water and building footprints raised into a 3D diorama - or wrapped around a sphere as your own tiny planet.
Extension

Any place on earth as a miniature you could hold.

City Diorama takes a place on the map and builds it: the real streets, canals, parks and building footprints of anywhere in the world, raised into a chunk of city you could pick up. Search a street and a town, drag the circle on the overview map until your own corner sits in the middle, and choose how much ground the piece takes.

The shape of the piece is yours – a circle, a hexagon, a heart, or a chunk torn out of the ground, standing on a clean slab, a rocky base or floating like an island. Or wrap the whole area around a sphere and the neighbourhood becomes a small planet, streets running over the horizon and back to where you started.

Fourteen looks change the whole world at once: a clay model, a cartoon town with inked edges, faceted low poly, glazed porcelain, brass on slate, a paper city, a blueprint, neon, timber, first snow, watercolour, noir, candy, or the city after dark with lit windows and street lamps.

Building heights come from OpenStreetMap where somebody measured them, and from a model that learns the local building culture where nobody did – so a village stays a village and Midtown keeps its skyline. Mark the spots that matter, your house, your venue, the church you were married in, and join them with a route. Everything arrives as one group: the picture as a re-editable layer, the title and the coordinates as text you can restyle.

Features

Your own corner, not just your town

Search a street with its town, then drag the circle on the overview map until the crossing you meant sits in the middle. The map is already loaded, so it follows your hand without waiting.

Features

Heights that are measured where they are known

OpenStreetMap knows the height of some buildings and says nothing about the rest. What is measured is used; the gaps are filled by a model that asks the measured neighbours first, because buildings stand in blocks and a block has one building culture.

Features

A tiny planet, wrapped all the way round

Choose the globe and the whole area rolls up into a sphere: the centre of your map becomes the north pole, the streets run over the horizon, and the buildings stand upright wherever they are.

Features

The spots that matter, and the way between them

Click the ground to drop a marker on your house, your venue or your shop, name it, and join the markers with a route that arcs above the roofs. The names are drawn into the picture, upright and readable.

What is included

  • Fourteen looks, from clay model and cartoon to brass, blueprint, snow and the city at night
  • Eight shapes: circle, square, rounded square, hexagon, octagon, heart, a torn chunk - and the tiny planet
  • Five bases: a clean cut, a chunk torn from the ground, tapered, a plinth, or a floating island
  • Ten starter places with their coordinates built in, from Midtown to the Speicherstadt
  • An overview map of the whole neighbourhood, with the diorama draggable on it
  • Up to twelve named markers, joined as a chain or as spokes from the first
  • Sun direction, sun height, shadows and lit windows
  • Title, subtitle and coordinates inserted as editable text layers, not baked into the picture
  • Everything re-editable later through Edit City Diorama
  • Seven languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch

Requirements

Works in every modern browser with WebGL. Runs on top of WunderPaint; map data comes from OpenStreetMap through your own site, so nothing about your searches leaves it.

Frequently asked questions

From OpenStreetMap, through your own site: the editor asks the map services on the server side and caches the answers there, so the browser never talks to them directly. Map data is (c) OpenStreetMap contributors and the attribution is drawn into the picture.
The footprints are real: every wall follows the outline somebody mapped. The heights are real wherever OpenStreetMap has them – in a city centre that is often half the buildings, in a village almost none – and estimated for the rest from what the neighbours do. The same place and the same seed always give the same skyline.
Yes. Search the street with its town, house number included if you like. The overview map then shows the whole neighbourhood around it, and you drag the diorama to the exact spot you want in the middle.
